Concluding Remarks

The HPO-A, with its constituents along the various levels, plays some role in maintaining the fragile balance of mood. Any imbalance along its cascade might disrupt the regulation of the other components in the positive and negative feedback loops that are so common in the HPO-A. Interactions of the HPO-A with neurotransmitter systems are likewise complex. Things may even be more complicated if we take into account the known moodinfluencing effects of other hypothalamic-pituitary-peripheral organ axes; impaired regulations along the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (cortisol, corticotropin, and the associated [3-endorphin), and the hypothalamicpituitary-thyroid axis (thyrotropin, triiodothyronine, and thyroxine) have repeatedly been attributed to mood disorders (Pedersen et al 1993; Leibenluft et al 1994). These axes might be modulated by the HPO-A. Synaptic interactions have indeed been recently identified between the HPO-A and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis at the hypothalamic level (Almeida et al 1993). It seems that a dysregulation of HPO-A activity plays a significant role, together with other hormonal axes and some neurotransmitters, in mood regulation.
